Race Day and High Stakes Drifter hit stores

As my schedule continues to recover after four days in Anaheim, it's nice to note that other schedules are recovering as well. In this case, WizKids has been doing the recovering, as the delayed High Stakes Drifter CCG just hit stores. At the same time, the company's NASCAR tie-in game, Race Day, has also reached retail shelves. As you'll hear in our next podcast, the game looks damn good, and is likely to be another successful CSG release for WizKids. Both press releases follow.

WizKids press release: High Stakes Drifter CCG
High Stakes Drifter Releases!

November 23, 2005 (SEATTLE) — WizKids Inc., creator of the runaway hit games HeroClix® and Pirates of the Spanish Main™, is proud to announce the release of High Stakes Drifter™, the company’s first collectable card game (CCG)!

“High Stakes Drifter is the fast-paced game of Wild West action,” said Mike Samora, vice president of Sales and Marketing at WizKids®. “The game uses betting-and-bluffing mechanics to simulate a series of challenges with historical personalities like Billy the Kid and Wyatt Earp.” The game adds elements of luck to each challenge as well, with a unique kicker chip mechanic that can add a random effect to each showdown.

Each card features vintage photography and a western feel. The game play has been described as a mix between a saloon-style betting-and-bluffing game and a spaghetti western shootout.

High Stakes Drifter is sold in Starter Sets (MSRP $9.99) and Booster Packs (MSRP $2.99), and is available in hobby and specialty game stores.

WizKids press release: NASCAR Race Day CSG

Everything new players need to race comes in one low-priced (MSRP $3.99) Game Pack, including two cars and drivers, a track play mat, complete rules and a miniature die.

I am really liking Race Day. I bought the "Limited Edition Bonus Box" which came with 5 cars, 2 full sized dice, and a large full color Pocono Raceway track.
The cars went together fairly easy, and seem very sturdy. I didn't experience any brakeage at all. The basic rules feel like Formula De "lite", and solid. I have yet to play, but I oculd see this being aa very fun quick game to play between friends.
More after I get a game in...

Ok, played the basic game. I crashed on lap one. My bad.
I like it a lot. It also looks like the only WizKids CSG that you can play with _one_ pack for two people. That is neat.
The advanced game also looks fun, and thats for next try. I feel the game may be much better multiplayer, than one on one. It would add a little more randomization to play. Buy the $10 starter if you are interested in trying it. 5 cars, full color gloss map. Big thumbs up!

It's the nature of the game that you can play with two people and just one pack. Can you imagine just about anything other than a race being interesting with just two pieces? :)

I almost wish I cared about NASCAR, because it does look interesting. Of course I said the same thing about their baseball game.

November 26, 2005 11:00 PM: Chris Hanrahan says...

I dunno. You would almost think you could get away with playing Pirates or Rocketman with a single pack. I suppose you can, but it's just not too fun. Race Day manages to be pretty darn fun with two. It's sure good for us, because it's a nice little add-on sale at $4. Pirates and Rocketment only get interesting with about 2-3 packs per person, requiring a $20 buy in...
So yay for it being "one-packable". :)
