I Just Lost $120,000
Just like the other 11,000 people who entered the Wizards of the Coast design a world contest, I was not notified this week that my entry was one of the eleven picked to go on to the second round. WotC was only going to pick ten entries to advance to the second stage, but the overwhelming response prompted them to pick one extra. For those of us that did not win, this will be our only notification that we are losers. Guess I gotta keep my job now!

Blackmoor Rises from the Depths

Before there was Greyhawk or Dungeons & Dragons there was Dave Arneson and his Blackmoor Campaign. While some people will claim that D&D was conceived and created by just one person (someone with the initials GG), the impact of Dave Arneson can never be discounted and the significance of Blackmoor cannot be overlooked. Blackmoor was a campaign Arneson ran in the early 70's and was included in the original D&D white box set from TSR. Now Dave's master creation is coming to D20. Dave's Zeitgeist Games is going to publish the converted sourcebook, and although no date has been set for the first book to be published, you can bet it is going to be a great day for the RPG world. If you cannot wait that long, you can download a PDF of the original book from Dave's expansive site.

Atlas Games is Just a Big Tease
Atlas Games has solved the dilemma of giving a sneak peek of one of their upcoming books without ruining the surprise. Blood and Sand: An Ars Magica Sourcebook of the Near East is hitting the stores in September , and details the mysteries of the near east. Detailing the culture and minutiae of Egypt, the Ottoman Empire, and the rest of Asia Minor, this book looks like a groundbreaking effort on the part of Atlas Games. Well, if you are interested in the book, you can take a look at some related content that will not be found in the book. Atlas Games has posted a PDF preview that deals with Arabic culture, the history of Islam, and the ways to integrate Islam into your existing game. The information posted on the web will not be part of the finished book, so check it out now.

  • The weapons & armor of Japan, China and the rest of the Orient.
  • Spears, swords, bow and arrow, and other weapons unique to the Orient.
  • A look at the Samurai, his weapons and armor.
This looks like a cool book and brings back images of the classic Bushido from Fantasy Games Unlimited.

The Cold War's Back and You're Gonna Get in Trouble...

Far Future Enterprises has this item listed on their website with a release date of March 2002. I received the following in reply to my questions:

FFE Announces Classic Reprints of Twilight: 2000 Role-Playing Game

Far Future Enterprises announced that it has acquired the Twilight: 2000 role-playing game and will reprint every word of the original game and modules in compendium volumes. Twilight: 2000 has been described as "the ultimate military role-playing game." Set in various parts of the world after a massive nuclear world war, the game pits individual military characters against local forces, brigands, animals, and the forces of nature as the war rages around them. An award-winning game, the core system and its adventure modules have won major industry recognition. Twilight: 2000 was originally published by Game Designers' Workshop.

"This reprint series will provide all of the Twilight: 2000 material in a series of uniform books for collectors. Many of the original modules are collector's items increasingly hard to find," publisher Marc Miller commented. "But there's more: Twilight: 2000 is eminently playable and enjoys a large following. Quite a few players want new copies for playing purposes. Ultimately, Twilight: 2000 players or collectors will have the entire set in a series of uniform volumes."

The first volume of the reprint series will include the components and text of the original Twilight: 2000 first edition, plus four adventure Twilight: 2000 modules, all in a standard sized 8.5 x 11 bound book. It is scheduled for release in December, 2002. Retail price will be $32.

Far Future Enterprises publishes science-fiction role-playing products (including the award-winning Traveller, Twilight: 2000, and 2300 AD) and licenses designs to other publishers (including Traveller for GURPS and for D20, and Imperium)."

I don't know about you folks, but this sucker's going on my Christmas List. 2300AD is also on their release schedule for October of this year. However, that project may also be subject to delay. After all, FFE is a game company...

Mystic Eye Overruns Planet. Head for the Shelters

As Wild Spellcraft and The Witch of Loch-Durnan wind their way to stores this week, Mystic Eye Games has announced the details of their upcoming D20 releases. Sit back, there's a bit to take in.

In October, MEG will send in Raw Recruits, a 160 page Dragonstar campaign adventure aimed at taking characters from first to sixth level. The quests contained in the supplement will contain "strange planets, haunted factories, overrun freighters, experimental labs, pirate attacks" and more, all for a mere $24.99. Also in the pumpkin month, we'll see Interludes: Sands of Pain, a 64 page sourcebook that "brings the characters from Bluffside south to the Dragon Sands" in an Arabic style. $12.99 will get you the fourth level adventure, which will be adjustable to accommodate other levels, and MEG will provide web enhancements in a password protected area of its website. New creatures, items, Prestige Classes, spells and such will be included, naturally. I had a peek at Sands at GenCon, as well as the product it leads into, Dry Lands: Empires of the Dragon Sands, and I'm looking forward to both.

In November, Mystic Eye will present Arcane Mysteries: Necromancer's Legacy. This 96 pager sounds creepy from the word go. In it's pages, you can "meet the Lotahm, a prestige class of those whose link with their bird companions grants them eerie powers; revel in the power granted by the Canopic Jar; or lust after the alabaster maiden as her gaze strikes you dead." New creatures, items, spells... sounds like this supplement will be all things dead and undead, so break out your $16.99 and your priest. As if that weren't enough, Foul Locales: Beyond the Walls will add 128 pages of detailed locations to drop into any quest. This time, MEG will take it outside, with monster lairs, mountain fortresses, and the like. A mere $19.99 will get you a copy.

On top of all that, there's a couple of fan sites that have cropped up in support of Giant Monster Rampage, MEG's game of... um, giant monsters, rampaging. Get some extra monsters at this site, or the stats for a particular giant lizard here.

Arkham? I don't even know 'um

Skotos Tech has announced an agreement that will bring Lovecraftian horror to online roleplaying. Under license from Chaosium, a design team has begun work on a new game entitled Lovecraft Country: Arkham by Night. Based in and around good old Miskatonic U. and the town of Arkham circa 1930, the brooding horror game will add special mechanics for dreaming and insanity to Skotos' prose roleplaying style. Lovecraft Country is targeted for an early 2003 release. Any game that fools with a player's perception of the game to simulate state of mind is worth a look, I think.

SnarfQuest D20: 'Cuz you know you want it
On November 1st, be on the lookout for the return of Larry Elmore's classic comic strip from the pages of Dragon Magazine, the one and only SnarfQuest. Only this time, Snarf, Telerie and the gang will have stats. Yep, the SnarfQuest D20 Worldbook is soon to show up at stores near you, allowing for that telepathic death leech your game was lacking to finally arrive. Designers Jamie Chambers and Tony Lee have insured the Worldbook will come standard with all the usual goodies a D20 gamer looks for: new feats, skills, and Prestige Classes. I'd tell you more about the 64 page book, but the PDF preview on the site doesn't seem to be working. Best left to the imagination, perhaps.

Less Jim Carrey and more Frank Gorshin, this nice little piece of Kanemania is just the latest DC villain to be revealed for the upcoming DC HeroClix: Hypertime game. So far they have revealed eight figures, four good guys and four bad guys. Gotta keep the odds even (unless you count Aquaman).

It comes with a nice timeline of robot evolution (where does Steve Guttenberg fit into this game) and the reasons for current (game time) robot dominance. WizKids To Fight Online Discounters

This is interesting. WK is trying to advocate for an end to the kind of loss-leading online discounts that retail store owners hate so much, for the simple reason that "[i]t leaves money on the table." WotC has never mounted a campaign like this, to my knowledge, even though this kind of thing certainly goes on with booster boxes. Why is WizKids suddenly interested in doing retailers a favor, after lowering their discount back in the spring? Ever wanted to cut out a random shape to have it represent the map? That's exactly what Skeletonkey's counting on. The first set, Caverns, will be out in early January 2003, and retail for $6.50.

Skeletonkey had some competition in the magnetic dungeon tile market this year, as Carnivorous Plant Games made its debut a mere two aisles away. CPG claimed to be "a little more durable," while Skeletonkey was stating, "You can write on ours." Which would I choose? Uh-uh, I'm not getting into this one. "My name's Paul, and this is between y'all."

Jeseret Marches to the Beat of Multiple Drummers

Just who is Jeseret Games? Well, it's a british company that was in the back right corner of the GenCon exhibit hall showing off Magical Arena. The game pits CCG players against wargamers in both skirmish miniatures and card game formats, simultaneously. Of course, the cards and minis can play separately, but why not take advantage of the opportunity to prove gaming superiority across game types? Yes, there are booster packs, and many cards have a corresponding miniature to use (if not, players can use the small plastic stands to hold the cards upright). Magical Arena isn't available in the States just yet, but with an idea like this, it shouldn't be long.

    Of Anti-Feats and Dwarves

Kenzer & Company had one of the nice big booths at the front of the GenCon exhibit hall. There was a long, winding table that displayed the various product lines from Fairy Meat to Hackmaster, and the traditional doodle wall, of course. The Villain Design Handbook for d20 was selling well, and when I learned of the "anti-feats" concept introduced therein (think flaws from GURPS, or hindrances from Deadlands), I was mildly tempted to pick one up. Of course, I've been wondering why someone didn't do this sooner, so it would've been more an informational purchase than a "Dear god, I've got to have it!!" But I was pulled away by the sight of a boardgame being shown off near the doodle wall called Dwarven Dig. Coming in Spring '03, the game touted itself as the "hard hitting, cave-smashing, grit-digging game of dwarves," and several gamers were deeply engrossed in the experience. I'll have to watch for that one, anti-feats or no.

Spell Decks, Other Printings From Paradigm

Let's face it: TSR's old spell decks were a good idea gone horribly wrong. Paradigm Concepts has a new attempt at easy reference spell cards with three sets of Spell Decks : Mysteries of the Arcane (arcane spells), Blessings of the Divine (divine spells), and Songs of the Wild (spells for rangers, druids and bards). Each set contains 360 spell cards covering the range of core D&D3e books, plus a sprinkling of selections from Green Ronin, Twin Crowns and Ambient Press. Mastery of the Mind, a set of cards for psionic powers, is ready to go to print, but until the WotC corrects the admitted oversight in the SRD, psionic power descriptions are off limits. Paradigm expects to go to press shortly, though. Additionally, the company's website will soon have a PDF available of the metamagic feat cards, which can be printed and clipped to the appropriate spells.

Paradigm's latest releases were on display at GenCon: Carnival of Swords, a supplement for the Living Arcanis RPGA campaign, Forged In Magic, which fully details 417 new mystic items, and Lords of the Peaks: The Essential Guide to Giants, which combines efforts with Green Ronin Publishing's Hammer & Helm dwarves supplement. While I didn't hear the outcome of the Living Arcanis Assault Upon the Gate of Tears tournament, Paradigm president Henry Lopez told me that several tables were running the event, so it's a good thing Paradigm brought additional RPGA judges.

Coming up for Paradigm are two Races of Legend supplements, Eldest Sons and Unveiled Masters. Both will take advantage of the OGL Interlink with Green Ronin to double the pleasure, double the fun. Paradigm's Eldest Sons: The Essential Guide to Elves will pair up with GR's Wrath & Rage: A Guidebook to Orcs and Half-Orcs, while Unveiled Masters: The Essential Guide to Mind Flayers will intertwine with GR's Plot & Poison: A Guidebook to Drow.

    Citizen Games Harasses OgreCave Reporter

Michael and Rob of Citizen Games tried to influence my posts while at GenCon (they got online from the computer next to me at the convention center). I resisted their offers of cash, and had already received Sidewinder and the new Masterscreen: Customizable GM Screen before the subject of bribery even came up. So the post they asked for, stating simply "Citizen Games Rox!" in two inch high letters, will not come to pass. However, I'll tell you that several companies are working on PDF GM screens to print and use with Masterscreen, including Bastion Press, Gold Rush Games, Grey Ghost Press, Living Room Games, Otherworld Creations, Paradigm Concepts, Tyranny Games, and Wingnut Games.

Dungeoneer should be out around November, despite the official page still saying March '02. Way of the Witch is due in a couple of weeks, and the Citizen Games booth was proudly displaying cover art for Path of the Magi, scheduled for a December release. I also had a look at an upcoming project the company has in the works, but I ain't tellin' you until I get the go-ahead.

According to Pagan, the set is ready, entirely done, but stock market changes have... delayed funding. The current estimate is to release the set by Christmas, unless someone with cash to spare wants to step up and chip in. Pagan is also plugging away at Delta Green D20, a sure sell, which is also targeting a Christmas season release. The shelves weren't bare, though, as The Resurrected III: Out of the Vault is freshly released for GenCon. Also, the dice game Inning-A-Minute: Baseball was making a fair showing, and looked like a potential winner with sports enthusiasts. Steve Jackson Games announced today that they have signed an agreement with Marc Miller (the creator of Traveller) to continue to publish Traveller for another three years. In addition, SJ Games is preparing to delve into a previously uncharted time period in the Traveller universe. In the summer of 2003 Steve Jackson will release GURPS Traveller: The Interstellar Wars, focusing on the period in which humans from Terra: reached the stars for the first time, only to find that they were already owned by someone else. Centuries of conflict followed, in which the outnumbered Terrans fought for their very survival against a vast but decadent alien empire. We are all looking forward to this.

Pinnacle Finally Finds Lost Colony, Heads For Savage Worlds

So I was scanning for news, thinking how strange it is that there aren't more big Earth-shattering kabooms in press-release-land on the week of Gen Con, when I ran across a note from Pinnacle that casually notes that they're finally doing a Deadlands: Lost Colony core book. Everyone but me probably knew already, but if not, there you go. They also talk about demos of something new - a new roleplaying system, the release of which from a large company inherently shows some sack in the post-d20 era - called Savage Worlds. What has me excited about this is it allegedly isn't just Yet Another System - this one has design differences geared towards running large combats, quickly. I'll tell you right now, a rules system that's substantially faster and can still account for some tactical options could possibly get me back into roleplaying on a regular basis. I'll have to look at these rules and see whether they light my fire. No tangible products have been announced yet, but there's plenty to download.

    Wiz-War To Go Digital

Our buddy Tom Jolly dropped us a line to say that one of the Cave's favorite games, Wiz-War, will be making the conversion to computer screens by the end of 2003. CodeFire, Inc. has acquired the interactive rights from Jolly Games, and intends to develop both a "3D action shooter for game consoles based on the Wiz-War property as well as an online personal computer version." Since Magic: The Gathering was inspired in part by Wiz-War, and Magic's been in computer form for some time now, is it any wonder that the classic Wiz-War will make the leap as well? Can I get an "amen"?

That's not all the juicy Wiz-War news, either. Wiz-War: 8th edition will be out by the end of this month as well, featuring full color cards, 25 more cards overall, and art by David K. Wong.
